Dr. Mark Kogan received his undergraduate and MD degrees from Northwestern University. As a member of the prestigious Honors Program in Medical Education, he earned both degrees in a total of 6 years. After completing his Internal Medicine residency at Cornell University, he went on to complete his Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Colorado.

Dr. Kogan has been practicing in the Bay Area since 1987 and has been exhaustively involved in the medical community in numerous leadership roles. He has served as Chief of Staff at Doctors Medical Center and as President of the Alameda Contra Costa Medical Association, and as Chief of Gastroenterology at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. Additionally, he has served as a Regional Medical Director for the Alta Bates Medical Group as well as sat on the clinical practice committee for the American Gastroenterology Association. Currently, he is a member of the California delegation to the American Medical Association and serves on the Board of Trustees of the California Medical Association. He also has had teaching appointments at UCSF School of Medicine as Assistant Clinical Professor and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Touro Osteopathic Medical School. He has been named one of the top Gastroenterologists in the Bay Area by San Francisco Magazine for 2016, 2017, and 2018.

A native of Chicago, Dr. Kogan enjoys spending time with his family. He also enjoys the natural beauty of the Bay Area and spends his free time hiking, skiing, and golfing.

Dr. Kogan believes in providing the highest quality medical care while respecting the dignity of all patients. His goal is to expertly manage the digestive health of his patients, as well as to provide education and address any concerns. Dr. Kogan enjoys all aspects of consultative and therapeutic gastroenterology. Colon cancer screening and inflammatory bowel disease are areas of special interest to him. I was late, and Dr. Kogan met with me in minutes, asked relevant questions while thoroughly explaining what everything meant in layman's terms (no medical jargon!!) and escorted me right to the door when we were done! I love Dr. Kogan! What I like the best of Dr. Kogan is that is human and spends time listening to me talk about my GI issues. Dr. Kogan is very professional and knowledgeable. I have struggled with serious and complicated chronic health problems for decades. It’s always difficult to relocate and have to search for a new physician. As a former health care worker, I know that there is always a learning curve for physician, patient and office staff, especially if the patient gets sicker, as I did. I am so fortunate to have chosen Mark Kogan, MD as my physician. He is compassionate, kind and very knowledgeable. He is patient, respectful and willing to really listen to his patients. He goes out of his way to make sure his patients are taken care of. I have always felt that we are working together as a team and I have actually never experienced the level of care I have received here at any other physician’s office. I am old so that’s quite a few offices and physicians. I realize there have been issues with the office and calls etc. I believe during COVID these may have been somewhat more apparent and I believe that the physicians and office staff have been really trying very hard to address these issues. So I won’t deduct any stars for that. I am so very grateful to have a physician like Dr. Kogan caring for me and wish all patients could have this experience with their provider.

Excellent visit. Staff all very, very helpful and pleasant. They made the whole experience very easy when coordinating healthcare, specialty medications, different doctors, etc can be tricky and time consuming. Dr Kogan is wonderful. Dr. Kogan takes the time to listen to me which is critical to my care. He's knowledgeable and patient. I ask a lot of questions and advice regarding my treatment plan which he is willing to answer. He gives me the pros and cons to taking certain medications and advises me accordingly. But it's clear the decision is always mine to make and that is refreshing in this day an age. Our loved one has had chronic constipation since he went on solid foods as a baby. It's been a long road with doctors and the County health system. We were fearful that the County might not allow us to see Dr. Kogan, but we got in. And we're so glad we did. Dr. Kogan presents himself in the most professional manner, but also is very personable. He's knowledgable in your particular case which was evident while speaking with him. Every doctor we've encountered has expected us to fill out paper work regarding conditions and then speak the exact same words during the exams. So kudos to Dr. Kogan for actually doing his job. His office staff are all really great to work with. Don't let the location put you off. Really old building in San Pablo. It's a marvel they are there, but we wouldn't want it any other way. We're looking forward to working with Dr. Kogan. We recommend Dr. Kogan highly. We'd travel miles to have him on our team.

Dr. Kogan is sincerely worthy of all of the five-star ratings which have preceded mine. He is one of the three or four best doctors who have ever treated me...and, in sixty-seven years, I have seen quite a few doctors. Dr. Kogan is, from the patient's perspective, an excellent physician, one of the best. Dr. Kogan is highly knowledgeable, and highly qualified in his field. He listens to patients, he answers their questions, he addresses their concerns. Again, for the patient, this is the best kind of doctor. The first time I saw Dr. Kogan I knew I was in good hands. The depth of his knowledge about a complex operation I'd had and what should be done to keep my recovery on track was so encouraging. Somewhat difficult to get an appointment but once there staff was helpful. Doctor Kogan was great, he was a few minutes late but once in really listened to what I was saying and didn't seemed rushed as many of my doctors are. Has a great bedside manner.
