What is Rezūm?

Rezūm is a treatment that uses water vapor therapy to address BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia). BPH is a noncancerous condition in which an enlarged prostate blocks urine from flowing out of the bladder. Using thermal energy in water vapor (steam), obstructing prostate tissue can be treated. This will help to relieve the following BPH symptoms:

• Urinary frequency
• Urinary urgency
• Irregular flow
• Weak urine stream
• Straining during urination
• Getting up in the middle of the night to urinate

How does Rezūm work?

Using a handheld device, radiofrequency energy is applied to a few drops of water to create vapor. The water vapor is injected into the prostate tissue that is blocking the flow of urine from the bladder. Once inside the prostate tissue, the vapor turns back to water and releases the energy into the cell membranes. At this point, the cells are immediately and gently damaged, causing cell death. Over 2-3 months, your body will absorb the treated prostate tissue through a natural healing response.

What are the benefits of Rezūm?

Rezūm is a great alternative to BPH medications because it relieves symptoms safely and effectively. A majority of our patients notice improvement of their symptoms within a couple of weeks. The procedure is a simple in-office/outpatient therapy that can be performed under oral sedation or local anesthesia. Unlike certain BPH medications, Rezūm does not affect sexual function. You should be able to return to your normal routine within a few days to a week! Ultimately, the goal is to get you urinating better off all prostate medications.

What can I expect from the results?

Clinical studies are ongoing to determine actual length of the results, but many men have seen sustained improvement for a few years. Symptom improvement following the procedure is gradual, but most patients see improvement after a couple of weeks.

Am I a candidate?

Men with BPH who are 50 and older are good candidates for the Rezūm system. This treatment is also recommended for men who do not want to take medication or undergo a surgical procedure.
